Bizarre Cruelty

We are very busy answering calls for help all over the South East and have recently had to make an urgent trip an hour away with full water butts to a herd of horses left without water during high temperatures.  Thanks to vigilant locals the problem has now been resolved and we have gained another field officer in the process.

As we travel around we see more and more horses standing in New Zealand rugs on hot days!  How bizarre!  What is going on?  This is another form of cruelty especially if these animals are denied access to water and this, we have found, is often the case.

It is amazing how many animals are denied one of the basic needs.  Recently we have met elderly owners that have denied their horses food because they believed "it would make them ill"!  Two emaciated horses were rescued from such homes but sadly we got there too late and neither made it.  One breed of pony in particular that we are called out to see more than any other is Shetlands and Shetland types.  We have found that they are overweight, laminitic or left to starve in case they might become laminitic!

The picture is of a pony that was abandoned in Paddock Wood.  Do you know who she is?  She is very sweet but her deformed feet were in need of urgent attention.  We would love to know her name and history.

As this is being written Dinty, our Head of Welfare has just left on an urgent call-out with hay and water to visit horses an hour away.  In spite of all that goes on at the Centre we do have our lighter moments.  While riding the Downs and having dismounted her ex-polo pony, Wendy, in order to open a gate, she was trying to remount when a lady passing by said, "I don't think you should ride that pony; it's too dangerous.  Why don't you ride her in an indoor school if you must ride her?"

Wendy wouldn't let her remount and there wasn't a man in sight to give her a leg up so it was an hours walk, leading the pony, back to the box.  Wendy certainly has a great sense of humour and Dinty quite enjoys walking the Downs anyway.

A big thank you to all our hard-working Field Officers and if you want to join the team in making a difference then give us a ring.  If you know of neglect or cruelty and need help or advice then ring us, hotline 24 hours 01424 892381.  No call will be treated as trivial.
